Human Capital in Italy: An empirical analysis based on hamlet-level data.
Abstract
The development of a territory depends largely on its level of human capital. This work is focalized on an important component of human capital as tertiary education. Using data from the 2011 Italian Census, we propose an explorative analysis of the territorial differences in the number of graduates at a very granular level, the 68.537 Italian hamlets. We find that the hamlets in mountain areas and those more far from the province capital are the least attractive for graduates.
